A message from Gary F. Steele, Manager of Member Relations.

Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC) is deeply involved in the community and proud to support the Historic Monkey Island Enrichment Project. Their Crystal River District crews played a significant role in enhancing the island's appeal and providing a unique viewing experience for visitors.

A dedicated team from WREC utilized a barge with heavy equipment to access the island and set all the poles for the updated habitat. They also installed new ropes, nets, and platforms to keep the monkeys active and entertained. Every pole on the perimeter of Monkey Island, as well as the poles used to build the monkeys' home was donated by the Cooperative. WREC also installed an osprey nest platform equipped with a webcam, along with four panoramic view cameras. These installations not only enhance the island's appeal but also offer visitors a unique and engaging way to observe the island's wildlife. To protect these installations, WREC implemented a pole-mounted anti-climb roller device to safeguard the cameras and the osprey nest from the resident primates.

WREC and their employees are committed to supporting and giving back to the community. WREC Superintendent, Kevin Weigeshoff, sits on the Monkey Island board, further demonstrating their dedication to community involvement. WREC’s General Manager, David Lambert, stated, “At WREC, we are deeply committed to supporting our local community and preserving its unique landmarks. Our recent work on Monkey Island is a testament to this dedication.” The collaborative efforts of WREC, other local businesses, and the community made this project possible, highlighting the power of community partnership. This project not only helps preserve a beloved local landmark but also attracts thousands of visitors to the area, fostering a sense of pride among residents.
